# Ancient City / Deep Dark Survival Guide

_Published October 9, 2026_

How to avoid summoning the Warden, what loot is actually worth the risk, and the Swift Sneak leggings build that makes sneaking through an Ancient City viable.

Ancient Cities are the best loot in the game that most players actively avoid, because the Warden guarding them can kill a fully-armored player in two or three hits. It's entirely survivable — the Warden is blind and has no ranged attack — but it rewards moving carefully instead of mining through walls like everywhere else.

## How the Warden actually gets summoned

Wardens don't patrol the Deep Dark on their own. They're summoned by **sculk shriekers** — the horned, speaker-like sculk blocks scattered through the ancient city — and it takes **four separate shrieker activations** in roughly the same area before a warden actually spawns. The first couple of activations are genuinely safe; they're a warning system, not an instant threat. The danger is cumulative carelessness, not one wrong step.

## Staying off the Warden's radar

The Warden is completely blind and detects you entirely through vibrations and smell, which means stealth is a real, mechanical strategy rather than flavor text:

- **Sneak everywhere.** Sneaking suppresses most movement-type vibrations that sculk sensors and shriekers would otherwise pick up.
- **Walk on wool or carpet.** Sculk sensors can't detect footsteps or dropped items through wool — laying a path of wool across a shrieker-heavy room lets you cross it almost risk-free.
- **Don't sprint, jump, or break blocks unnecessarily.** All three generate strong vibrations that sneaking doesn't suppress.
- **Throw a distraction.** A tossed item or projectile landing elsewhere draws a sensor's attention to that spot instead of you — useful for clearing a shrieker's attention before you cross its range.
- **Swift Sneak closes the gap.** Normally sneaking is slow enough that it's a real tradeoff against safety. Swift Sneak III nearly eliminates the sneak-speed penalty, letting you move through a city at close to normal speed while still staying under detection — see the build below.

## What's actually worth getting

- **Echo shards** — the only way to craft a recovery compass, which points to your last death location. Found only in ancient city loot chests.
- **Swift Sneak enchanted books** — a `treasureOnly` enchantment, un-obtainable from an enchanting table or villager trade, that only drops from ancient city chests. It's a leggings-only enchantment (see [The Ideal Leggings Enchantments](/guides/ideal-leggings)), which makes it one of the few enchantments worth a dedicated trip rather than picking up incidentally.
- **Disc fragments** — five of them combine into the music disc "5," found nowhere else in the game.
- Enchanted tools, armor, and books, plus amethyst shards, candles, and the city's unique Ward/Silence armor trims.

## The real dangers, ranked

1. **The Warden itself** — a sniff attack that deals heavy melee damage and a sonic boom ranged attack once it's angry enough; both can strip most of a diamond-armor player's health in one hit.
2. **Fall damage and disorientation** — ancient cities are large, vertically irregular structures; it's easy to take unrelated fall damage while focused on sneaking past sensors.
3. **Darkness effect** — the Warden periodically inflicts a status effect that heavily obscures your vision, making the first mistake above easier to make, not harder.
4. **Panicking and sprinting** — by far the most common actual cause of warden encounters going badly; sprinting away triggers more vibrations than a measured sneaking retreat.

## The Swift Sneak Leggings

**Diamond Leggings:** Protection IV, Swift Sneak III, Unbreaking III, Mending I

## Frequently asked questions

**How many shrieker activations does it take to summon a Warden?**

Four activations within roughly the same area. The first few are a warning system rather than an immediate threat — the danger comes from repeatedly triggering shriekers in the same spot, not from a single mistake.

**Can the Warden see you?**

No, the Warden is completely blind. It detects players and mobs entirely through vibrations (movement, breaking blocks, sprinting) and smell, which is why sneaking and muffling your footsteps with wool are real defenses rather than flavor.

**Is Swift Sneak worth going into an Ancient City just to get?**

If you're planning repeat trips into the Deep Dark, yes — it's the only source of the enchantment and it directly counters the biome's main hazard (vibration detection) by letting you sneak at close to full speed. For a single one-time trip, wool and careful movement work fine without it.

**What's the single best piece of loot to prioritize?**

Echo shards and Swift Sneak books are both exclusive to this structure and have no other source in the game, which makes them the highest-priority grabs over generic enchanted gear you could get elsewhere.

**Can you fight the Warden instead of avoiding it?**

It's possible but not recommended with standard gear — the Warden has very high health and hits hard enough to kill a diamond-armored player in a few exchanges. Avoidance via sneaking and distractions is dramatically safer and faster than trying to fight through a city.
