# Curse of Binding in Minecraft: What It Does and How to Avoid It

_Published October 16, 2026_

What Curse of Binding actually locks in place, how it's removed, and why it's usually a risk rather than an upgrade.

Curse of Binding locks an item into its equipped slot — you can't take it off once it's worn, short of the item breaking or the wearer dying.

## What Curse of Binding actually does

An item with Curse of Binding cannot be removed from an armor slot by ordinary means once it's equipped. The only ways it comes off: the player dies (unless `keepInventory` is enabled), the item's durability runs out and it breaks, or the player switches to Creative mode. It's a single-level effect — there's no stronger version, it either applies or it doesn't. The curse only restricts removal from an equipped slot; it doesn't stop you from putting the item away in the first place or moving it around in your inventory before you wear it.

## How to use it

In survival, this is almost always something you want to *avoid* rather than seek out — it most commonly shows up on mob-dropped gear (certain mob heads, a zombie/skeleton's equipped armor) or treasure loot, not something you'd deliberately add to your own build. If you get an item with this curse, think carefully before equipping it, since you're committing to wearing it until it breaks or you die.

## Why this exists

Curse of Binding is one of two "curse" enchantments (alongside Curse of Vanishing) that work against the player rather than for them — Mojang's way of making certain loot/mob-drop gear feel riskier or more interesting to find, rather than a straightforward upgrade. See [Enchanting Strategy](/guides/enchanting-strategy) for how the anvil's mechanics (and this calculator) treat a curse the same as any other enchantment cost-wise — it's just one you'd typically choose to avoid combining onto your own gear.

## Frequently asked questions

**How do you remove Curse of Binding from an item?**

You can't remove the curse itself (not even with a grindstone). The item comes off only if it breaks from durability loss, the wearer dies (without keepInventory), or via Creative mode.

**Does Curse of Binding have multiple levels?**

No — it's a single-level (I) effect that either applies or doesn't; there's no stronger version.

**Can you get Curse of Binding from the enchanting table?**

No — like other curses, it's a treasure enchantment obtainable only via anvil, typically found on loot or mob-equipped gear, never offered directly by the enchanting table.
