# Channeling Enchantment in Minecraft: What It Does and How to Use It

Channeling summons real lightning on a thrown trident's target during a thunderstorm — the exact conditions it needs to trigger.

Channeling summons a real lightning bolt on whatever a thrown trident hits, during a thunderstorm.

## What Channeling actually does

When a Channeling trident hits an entity (or a lightning rod) while a thunderstorm is actively happening, it calls down a lightning strike on that target — in Bedrock Edition it also works on lightning rods during any rain, not just a thunderstorm. It requires a clear line of sight to the sky directly above the target (no roof or overhang in the way), and in Java Edition the target can't be struck while in water, lava, powder snow, cobweb, on soul sand, honey block, mud, or snow. Channeling has only one level — there's nothing to gain by trying to enchant it higher.

## How to use it

Channeling is a situational, weather-dependent effect — genuinely useful for a quick, repeatable lightning strike against a single target during a storm (including the "charged creeper" trick of striking a regular creeper to upgrade it), but it does nothing at all outside a thunderstorm and needs open sky. It never conflicts with Loyalty, so it's a natural pairing on a dedicated throwing trident.

## Well-known builds that use it

Channeling pairs with Loyalty on the "throwing trident" build in [The Ideal Trident Enchantments](/guides/ideal-trident) — added specifically for the thunderstorm lightning effect, alongside Impaling, Unbreaking, and Mending.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does Channeling work when it's not storming?**

No — Channeling only summons lightning during an actual thunderstorm (Java Edition). It does nothing on a clear day or during ordinary rain.

**Can Channeling and Riptide go on the same trident?**

No. Riptide excludes both Loyalty and Channeling individually, since Riptide never lets the trident leave your hand in the first place — there's nothing for either effect to trigger on.

**Does Channeling work underwater?**

No — in Java Edition, a target can't be struck by Channeling while in water (among several other conditions like lava, powder snow, and mud), and the target also needs clear sky overhead with no blocks in the way.

**What's the maximum level of Channeling?**

Level I — there's only one level, and the effect doesn't get stronger or more reliable past it.
