# Feather Falling Enchantment in Minecraft: What It Does and How to Use It

_Published October 16, 2026_

Feather Falling cuts fall damage by 12% per level, up to 48% at level IV — a boots-only enchantment with no effect on any other damage type.

Feather Falling cuts fall damage — and only fall damage, which is exactly why it doesn't conflict with any of the general Protection enchantments.

## What Feather Falling actually does

Each level reduces fall damage by 12%, up to 48% at level IV. It's boots-only and has no effect on any other damage type — unlike Protection/Blast/Fire/Projectile Protection, which cover broad damage categories, Feather Falling is narrowly specialized to exactly one thing.

## How to use it

Because it's narrow and doesn't compete with anything else, Feather Falling is close to a free pick on boots — it stacks alongside Protection (or whichever of its siblings you've chosen) with zero conflict. It's especially valuable for anyone doing a lot of vertical building, elytra flying (hard landings), or exploring without always placing water buckets.

## Well-known builds that use it

Feather Falling IV is standard on [The Ideal Boots Enchantments](/guides/ideal-boots), alongside Protection, Unbreaking, Mending, and either Depth Strider or Frost Walker (see [Frost Walker vs. Depth Strider](/guides/frost-walker-vs-depth-strider) for that tradeoff) or Soul Speed.

## Frequently asked questions

**How much fall damage does Feather Falling IV prevent?**

48% (12% per level). It only affects fall damage specifically — it does nothing against any other damage type.

**Does Feather Falling conflict with Protection?**

No. Feather Falling has no conflicts at all — it stacks with Protection (or Blast/Fire/Projectile Protection) and every other boots enchantment freely.

**Does Feather Falling reduce elytra crash-landing damage?**

Yes — hard landings after elytra flight count as fall damage, so Feather Falling reduces it the same way it reduces any other fall.
