# Fire Aspect Enchantment in Minecraft: Burn Duration and When to Use It

_Published October 16, 2026_

Exact burn duration per level, and why Fire Aspect is a real tradeoff rather than a default pick.

Fire Aspect sets a hit target on fire for several seconds, dealing damage over time on top of the weapon's normal hit.

## What Fire Aspect actually does

Each level adds 80 fire-ticks — 4 seconds of burning — to whatever it hits. At Level II that's 8 seconds of burn damage stacked on top of the weapon's own hit, independent of whatever damage-type enchantment (Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods) is also active, since Fire Aspect doesn't sit in that exclusion group at all.

## How to use it

Fire Aspect has no conflicts with anything, so the real question is whether the burn is actually wanted. It's genuinely situational rather than a default include: it's real extra damage over time, but it also burns away certain mob drops (and can be actively unwanted against mobs you're trying to collect intact drops from, or in a wooden-structure-heavy base where fire spread matters). That's exactly why it isn't part of the standard sword build — it's a real tradeoff, not a free addition the way Looting or Sweeping Edge are.

## Where this fits

Fire Aspect isn't part of the shipped ["God Sword"](/guides/god-sword) build on this site for the reason above — it's a genuine situational choice, not an oversight. See [Enchanting Strategy](/guides/enchanting-strategy) for how the anvil's prior-work penalty affects adding an optional enchantment like this one to an otherwise-finished weapon.

## Frequently asked questions

**What does Fire Aspect do in Minecraft?**

It sets whatever you hit on fire — 4 seconds of burning per level, so 8 seconds total at the maximum Level II — dealing damage over time on top of the weapon's normal hit.

**Is Fire Aspect worth using?**

It's genuinely situational rather than a default pick. The burn is real extra damage, but it also destroys certain mob drops and can set flammable terrain on fire — a real tradeoff, which is why it isn't part of the standard all-purpose sword build the way Looting or Sweeping Edge are.

**Does Fire Aspect conflict with Sharpness or Smite?**

No — Fire Aspect isn't in the damage-type exclusion group at all, so it stacks freely with Sharpness, Smite, or Bane of Arthropods.

**What's the maximum level of Fire Aspect?**

II, obtainable from the enchanting table, an anvil, or a villager trade.

**Does Fire Aspect work on a mace?**

Yes — it's the mace's primary damage-type-adjacent pick in Bedrock Edition, and a secondary enchantment option in Java Edition.
