# Frost Walker vs. Depth Strider

_Published October 9, 2026_

Frost Walker and Depth Strider are mutually exclusive — the real tradeoff, and which to pick for exploration vs. underwater builds. Free calculator included.

Frost Walker and Depth Strider both exist to solve the same problem — water slows you down — and they solve it in two completely different ways. That's exactly why the game won't let you have both on one pair of boots.

## Why they're mutually exclusive

Depth Strider and Frost Walker occupy the same enchantment-conflict group in the game's data (confirmed directly against the shipped conflict table: `depth_strider` excludes `frost_walker` and vice versa). Mechanically, they're competing answers to "how do I deal with water," not two unrelated bonuses that happen to overlap — the anvil treats them as a hard either/or on the same item, exactly like Fortune vs. Silk Touch on a pickaxe. There's no version of the game or edition where you can merge both onto the same boots; the anvil will drop whichever one you're sacrificing rather than apply it.

## What Depth Strider actually does

Each level of Depth Strider reduces the horizontal movement penalty you take while swimming by one-third. At level III, that penalty is fully gone — you move through water exactly as fast as you walk on land, horizontally. It has no effect on vertical swimming speed (sinking or rising), and levels beyond III add nothing further. Depth Strider is obtainable as a normal enchanting-table roll, plus fishing, librarian trades, and loot — it isn't restricted to treasure sources.

## What Frost Walker actually does

Frost Walker doesn't touch your swim speed at all. Instead, while you're walking on solid ground, it freezes nearby water source blocks into temporary frosted ice — a radius of 2 + level blocks (so a 3-block radius at level I, 4 at level II, which is also the max level). That ice only forms under these conditions: you're actually moving, on the ground (not falling, jumping, or already swimming), and there's air above the water. It melts on its own after a few seconds, faster in direct sunlight, which is why the frozen path behind you closes up again almost as soon as you've crossed it. It also grants immunity to magma block and campfire damage as a secondary bonus. Frost Walker is treasure-only — never a table roll — so villagers, loot, and fishing are your only sources.

## The real tradeoff: walk over it, or swim through it

If you're exploring the overworld — crossing oceans, rivers, and lakes as part of normal travel — Frost Walker is the better pick almost every time. You stay dry, never worry about hostile mobs or the dark sapping your visibility underwater, and can keep sprinting the whole way. It falls apart the moment you actually need to be *in* the water: it does nothing for swim speed, doesn't help you dive to depth, and is actively counterproductive if you're trying to build or fight below the surface, since it keeps icing over the water around you.

Depth Strider is the right call whenever your work is genuinely underwater — ocean monuments, shipwreck/ruins loot runs, aquatic farms, or any build that keeps you swimming rather than walking along the shore. It also matters in situations where Frost Walker simply can't help: flowing water, deep ocean where you're diving rather than crossing, or any time you're moving too fast (sprint-swimming, riding a boat) for the freeze radius to matter.

A reasonable middle ground some players use: Frost Walker as the default on your main boots for everyday travel, with a Depth Strider pair kept in your [inventory](/guides/using-your-inventory) for monument or shipwreck trips. See also [The Ideal Boots Enchantments](/guides/ideal-boots) for how either one fits alongside Feather Falling, Soul Speed, Unbreaking, and Mending on a full build.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can you combine Frost Walker and Depth Strider in Minecraft?**

No. They're hard mutually exclusive on the same item — confirmed directly in the game's enchantment conflict data. An anvil merge will drop whichever one you're sacrificing rather than apply it; there's no edition or version where both can coexist on one pair of boots.

**Which is better, Frost Walker or Depth Strider?**

It depends entirely on where you spend your time. Frost Walker wins for general overworld travel — you stay dry and keep full sprint speed crossing oceans and rivers. Depth Strider wins for anything that's genuinely underwater — ocean monuments, shipwrecks, aquatic bases — since Frost Walker does nothing for swim speed and actively works against you while diving.

**Does Frost Walker work while swimming?**

No. The ice only forms while you're moving on solid ground. It stops working the moment you're swimming, falling, or jumping, which is also why it can't help with deep-water travel at all.

**What level of Depth Strider removes all water slowdown?**

Level III. Each level removes one-third of the horizontal swim-speed penalty, so level III removes all of it, letting you move through water exactly as fast as walking on land. It only affects horizontal speed — sinking and rising speed are unchanged.

**Is Frost Walker obtainable from an enchanting table?**

No, it's treasure-only. You can only get it from loot chests, fishing, or villager trades — never as a table roll. Depth Strider, by contrast, is a normal table enchantment as well as being available from those same sources.
