# The Ideal Axe Enchantments

_Published September 13, 2026_

Axes are the only tool that can carry both a mining enchant and a full combat enchant at once — here's why, and the build to prove it.

Axes have a split personality: they're registered as both a **mining tool** and a **weapon** in the game's enchantment categories, which makes them the most enchantment-flexible item in Minecraft.

## Sharpness V

Since axes carry the "weapon" and "sharp weapon" enchant categories alongside pickaxes and shovels' mining categories, an axe can take Sharpness, Smite, or Bane of Arthropods exactly like a sword — and axes hit harder per swing than swords do, at the cost of a slower attack speed. Sharpness V adds flat bonus damage that scales with level, making an axe a legitimate primary weapon, not just a tree-chopping tool.

## Efficiency V

Axes are the correct tool for wood, and Efficiency V makes clearing a tree near-instant — genuinely useful if you're maintaining a tree farm.

## Unbreaking III + Mending

The same durability logic as every other tool: Unbreaking reduces the *rate* of durability loss, Mending converts XP into durability instead of levels, and together they mean you're very unlikely to ever see this axe's durability bar again.

## Silk Touch — worth a dedicated second axe

An axe shares the mining_loot category with pickaxes and shovels, so it can take Fortune or Silk Touch too — mutually exclusive with each other, same as on any other tool (see the FAQ below). The specific reason a Silk Touch axe earns its own slot in a toolbelt: axes are the preferred (fastest) tool for Melon and Pumpkin blocks, and without Silk Touch a melon block drops 3–7 loose slices instead of the block itself — Silk Touch picks up the whole melon intact, which matters for moving melons into storage or a farm layout without replanting from seeds. The same logic applies to Bookshelves: broken normally they drop 3 books, but a Silk Touch tool gets the shelf block itself.

**Diamond Axe:** Sharpness V, Efficiency V, Unbreaking III, Mending I

Sharpness only excludes Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Breach, Density, and Impaling — all specialty combat enchantments, none of which share a category with Efficiency, Unbreaking, or Mending. That means this exact four-enchant combo has zero conflicts, unlike a pickaxe's Fortune/Silk Touch fork.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can an axe have both Sharpness and Efficiency?**

Yes. Sharpness lives in the sharp_weapon category and only excludes Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Breach, Density, and Impaling — the other combat-damage enchantments. Efficiency is a mining-category enchantment with no exclusions at all, so the two stack freely on the same axe.

**Can an axe have Silk Touch and Fortune at the same time?**

No. Fortune and Silk Touch both live in the mining_loot category and explicitly exclude each other, on an axe exactly as on a pickaxe or shovel. You need two separate axes if you want both effects available.

**Should I use an axe or a sword for combat enchantments?**

Either works mechanically — axes carry the same weapon and sharp_weapon categories as swords, so Sharpness, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods are all legal on an axe. The trade-off is pure gameplay: axes hit harder per swing but swing slower, while swords attack faster for less damage per hit. Enchantment-wise there's no difference.

**Can an axe have Smite or Bane of Arthropods instead of Sharpness?**

Yes, but only one of the three. Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Sharpness, Breach, Density, and Impaling are all mutually exclusive with each other — pick whichever matches your target (Smite for undead, Bane of Arthropods for spiders/silverfish, Sharpness as the generalist pick) since you can't combine any two of them on one axe.
