# The Ideal Chestplate Enchantments

_Published September 16, 2026_

The simplest armor piece to enchant, and why that makes it the one to prioritize first.

The chestplate carries no slot-specific enchantments at all — no head, leg, or foot category applies here — which makes it the simplest piece of armor to get exactly right, and a good first piece to enchant while you're still learning the anvil.

## Protection IV (or a specialist swap)

Same fork as every armor piece: general Protection, or one of Fire/Blast/Projectile Protection if you know exactly what fight is coming. All four are mutually exclusive with each other.

## Thorns III

Reflects a percentage of melee damage back at attackers, stacking with any Protection variant since it lives in the general `armor` category rather than competing with it.

## Unbreaking III + Mending

No exclusions anywhere in this list, so a chestplate with Protection IV, Thorns III, Unbreaking III, and Mending all at once is entirely legal — the whole build in a single anvil sequence.

**Diamond Chestplate:** Protection IV, Thorns III, Unbreaking III, Mending I

Because there's no fork to think through, the chestplate is the cheapest and fastest "first fully-enchanted armor piece" to get right — a good template to copy across your whole armor set before you specialize the helmet, leggings, and boots further.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why is the chestplate the simplest armor piece to enchant?**

Because it has no slot-specific enchantments at all. Helmets get Respiration and Aqua Affinity, leggings get Swift Sneak, and boots get Feather Falling, Depth Strider, Frost Walker, and Soul Speed — but the chestplate only carries the shared general-armor build, so there's no extra fork or edition quirk to think through.

**Can you put Mending and Unbreaking on a chestplate together?**

Yes — Unbreaking and Mending have no exclusions with each other or with anything else in the build. Combined with Protection IV and Thorns III, a chestplate with all four enchantments at once is completely legal in a single anvil sequence.

**Can a chestplate have Protection and Thorns at the same time?**

Yes. Thorns lives in the general armor category with no exclusions, while Protection only excludes its three specialist variants (Fire, Blast, and Projectile Protection). The two don't compete, so they stack freely.

**Should I pick Protection IV or a specialist Protection variant for a chestplate?**

Protection IV is the right generalist pick for most play. Swap to Fire Protection, Blast Protection, or Projectile Protection only when you know exactly what's coming — a Nether trip, a Wither or raid fight, or a skeleton-heavy area — since all four are mutually exclusive and you can only have one on a given piece.
