Best Biomes for Mining Specific Resources

Y-level is most of the story for mining (see the Y-Level Mining Guide for the full depth chart), but a handful of resources also depend on which biome you're standing in — some exclusively so. A few of these pairings are commonly misremembered, so this guide only states what's actually verified against current generation data.

Badlands — the gold biome

Badlands, Eroded Badlands, and Wooded Badlands get a dedicated bonus gold ore batch on top of normal generation: roughly 50 extra veins per chunk, spread uniformly from Y=32 all the way up to Y=256. That's not a small bump — it's over ten times the standard gold generation rate, and it's placed shallow enough to reach by digging straight down from the surface rather than branch-mining at Y=-16 like everywhere else. Badlands is the only biome where surface-level gold mining is actually worthwhile.

Mountain biomes — the only source of emerald

Emerald ore generates exclusively in mountain-type biomes: Windswept Hills, Grove, Jagged Peaks, Frozen Peaks, Stony Peaks, Meadow, Cherry Grove, and their windswept-forest variants. There is no generation feature for emerald ore outside that biome list — no depth or luck substitutes for standing in the wrong biome. Within those biomes it ranges roughly Y=-16 to Y=320, peaking around Y=232.

Dripstone Caves — the copper bonus (not Lush Caves)

Dripstone Caves get a denser, additional copper ore batch layered on top of the ore that generates everywhere else, roughly in the same Y=-16 to Y=112 band copper normally uses. Lush Caves, by contrast, don't carry a copper bonus at all — their actual unique generation is clay (a dedicated underground clay feature found nowhere else) plus the cave's namesake moss, spore blossoms, and glow berries. If you're hunting copper specifically, Dripstone Caves is the biome to target.

The Deep Dark — sculk and echo shards

The Deep Dark biome is covered in sculk, sculk veins, sculk catalysts, and sculk shriekers, but the resource worth specifically going there for — echo shards — doesn't generate as a block you dig up in the open biome. Echo shards come from loot chests inside the Ancient City structure that generates within the Deep Dark, alongside Swift Sneak enchanted books found nowhere else in the game. See the Ancient City / Deep Dark Survival Guide for how to get in and out safely.

The Nether — gold ore and the Basalt Deltas correction

Nether gold ore generates uniformly throughout every Nether biome, at a flat rate of 10 veins per chunk between Y=10 and Y=117 — it is not restricted to Warped Forest or Crimson Forest. The actual biome-specific bonus is in Basalt Deltas, which double that rate to 20 veins per chunk. Bastion Remnants (a good source of gold blocks as loot, separate from ore generation) instead spawn in Nether Wastes, Soul Sand Valley, Crimson Forest, and Warped Forest — never in Basalt Deltas. In other words, the best biome for mining nether gold ore and the best biomes for finding a bastion are two different, non-overlapping answers.

Frequently asked questions

Does Lush Caves have a copper bonus like Dripstone Caves?

No — this is a common mix-up. The copper-specific bonus generation is in Dripstone Caves only. Lush Caves' unique generation is a dedicated clay feature plus moss, spore blossoms, and glow berries, not extra ore.

Can you find emerald ore anywhere besides mountain biomes?

No, not through natural generation. Emerald ore's ore feature is restricted specifically to mountain-type biomes (Windswept Hills, Grove, Jagged Peaks, and similar) — there's no depth, luck, or alternate biome that substitutes for being in one of them.

Is nether gold ore more common in Crimson or Warped Forest?

No — nether gold ore generates at the same uniform rate in every Nether biome. The biome that actually doubles its generation rate is Basalt Deltas, which is a different biome from where Bastion Remnants spawn.

Where do echo shards actually come from?

From loot chests inside an Ancient City structure, which generates within the Deep Dark biome. The surrounding Deep Dark biome itself (the open sculk terrain outside the city) doesn't generate echo shards as a minable block.

Is badlands worth mining in instead of deep branch mining for gold?

For gold specifically, yes — badlands' bonus batch is over ten times the normal generation rate and reachable at or near the surface. For every other ore, standard deep mining still applies since badlands doesn't boost anything besides gold.
