The Ideal Axe Enchantments

Axes have a split personality: they're registered as both a mining tool and a weapon in the game's enchantment categories, which makes them the most enchantment-flexible item in Minecraft.

Sharpness V

Since axes carry the "weapon" and "sharp weapon" enchant categories alongside pickaxes and shovels' mining categories, an axe can take Sharpness, Smite, or Bane of Arthropods exactly like a sword — and axes hit harder per swing than swords do, at the cost of a slower attack speed. Sharpness V adds flat bonus damage that scales with level, making an axe a legitimate primary weapon, not just a tree-chopping tool.

Efficiency V

Axes are the correct tool for wood, and Efficiency V makes clearing a tree near-instant — genuinely useful if you're maintaining a tree farm.

Unbreaking III + Mending

The same durability logic as every other tool: Unbreaking reduces the rate of durability loss, Mending converts XP into durability instead of levels, and together they mean you're very unlikely to ever see this axe's durability bar again.

  • Mending I

Sharpness only excludes Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Breach, Density, and Impaling — all specialty combat enchantments, none of which share a category with Efficiency, Unbreaking, or Mending. That means this exact four-enchant combo has zero conflicts, unlike a pickaxe's Fortune/Silk Touch fork.
