Max Fishing Rod: The Ideal Fishing Rod Enchantments
Published September 15, 2026
The fishing rod is the rare item in Minecraft with no forks, no exclusions, and no "it depends" — every enchantment it can take, it can take at once. That's not a coincidence: Luck of the Sea and Lure each solve a completely different half of the same problem, so there's nothing to trade off between them.
Luck of the Sea III
Increases the odds of a "treasure" catch (enchanted books, saddles, name tags, nautilus shells) and generally biases the loot table toward better junk-to-treasure ratios. It changes what comes out of the water — the single best enchantment for anyone running an AFK fishing farm for loot, since every extra treasure roll is pure upside with no downside to weigh against it.
Luck of the Sea is also how you catch the enchanted books themselves: see Enchanted Books From Fishing for the odds and what a fished book can do at the anvil.
Lure III
Reduces the average wait time before a fish bites — each level of Lure shaves a fixed chunk off the random delay before a bobber gets a bite, without touching the loot table at all. It changes how often you get a result, not what that result is. Because Luck of the Sea and Lure operate on two completely separate parts of the fishing mechanic (loot table odds vs. bite timer), stacking both is strictly better than either alone — pairing them maximizes catches-per-hour on a farm, with every catch also carrying Luck of the Sea's improved treasure odds.
Unbreaking III + Mending
The fishing rod categories are just fishing (Luck of the Sea, Lure) and durability (Unbreaking, Mending) — nothing else applies, and nothing in that short list excludes anything else. This is the one item on this site where the "ideal build" isn't really a decision at all — the calculator's own one-tap preset for it is simply called the Max Fishing Rod.

Frequently asked questions
Does Luck of the Sea make you catch fish faster, or does it just improve the loot?
Just the loot. Luck of the Sea shifts the catch odds toward the treasure category (enchanted books, saddles, name tags, nautilus shells) and away from junk, but it doesn't change how long you wait for a bite — that's Lure's job. They work on two completely separate parts of the fishing mechanic.
Can a fishing rod have Mending and Unbreaking together?
Yes, with no restrictions at all. A fishing rod's enchantment pool is just Luck of the Sea and Lure for fishing behavior, plus Unbreaking and Mending for durability — none of the four exclude each other.
Is there any reason not to max both Luck of the Sea and Lure?
No. Because one controls loot odds and the other controls bite timing, stacking both to level III is strictly better than picking one — there's no trade-off to weigh, which is why AnvilCalc's own preset for this item is just called the Max Fishing Rod.
What's the maximum level for Luck of the Sea and Lure?
Level III for both — the same cap shown in the Max Fishing Rod build above. Going past III isn't possible through normal enchanting or anvil combining.
