Do Anvils Break in Minecraft? Anvil Durability Explained

Yes — anvils can break from ordinary use. Every time you use one, there's roughly a 1-in-8 (about 12%) chance it degrades one step, and after enough of those it's destroyed outright and needs replacing. This is a completely separate mechanic from the rising XP cost covered in Enchanting Strategy — one is about the anvil block's own condition, the other is about a specific item or book's history.
The three damage stages
An anvil has three visual states: undamaged, slightly damaged (a few cracks appear), and very damaged (heavily cracked). Each successful use rolls a chance to drop it one stage further. From "very damaged," the same roll instead destroys the anvil completely — it disappears, drops nothing, and the block is simply gone.
Does a damaged anvil work differently?
No. A slightly or very damaged anvil repairs, renames, and combines exactly the same as a pristine one, at exactly the same XP cost — the damage is purely cosmetic right up until the anvil is destroyed entirely. There's no reason to avoid using a cracked anvil out of fear it'll somehow cost more; it won't, until the moment it breaks.
What breaks an anvil faster
Nothing about what you do in the anvil changes the odds — repairing, renaming, and combining all carry the same roughly 12% degrade chance per use. The only lever is how many times you use it: a farm or shared server anvil used constantly will crack and eventually break far sooner than one used occasionally. Keeping a couple of spares crafted and ready (3 blocks of iron + 4 iron ingots each) avoids getting stuck mid-project when one finally goes.
Replacing a broken anvil
There's no repair recipe for a damaged anvil — craft a new one the same way you made the first, from iron blocks and ingots at a crafting table.
