Best Armor Enchantments in Minecraft: Every Piece

The best armor enchantments in Minecraft are Protection IV on every piece, Unbreaking III and Mending, plus one or two enchantments that only fit a single slot. This guide gives the best build for the helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots, explains when to swap Protection for a specific protection, and settles the slot choices (Depth Strider or Frost Walker, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, Thorns).

Protection vs Fire, Blast and Projectile Protection

Protection, Fire Protection, Blast Protection and Projectile Protection exclude each other on the same armor piece. Protection IV is the right default, and you swap in a specific protection only when you know what you will face.

EnchantmentReducesPick it for
Protection IV4% per level of almost all damage (16% at IV)Everyday play, PvP, mixed threats
Fire Protection IVFire and lava damage, and burn timeNether trips and lava
Blast Protection IVExplosion damage and explosion knockbackExplosion-heavy fights
Projectile Protection IVDamage from arrows, tridents and other projectilesSkeleton-heavy areas

Two facts make this choice less strict than it looks. First, the exclusion applies per piece, so a full set can mix them: for example three pieces with Protection IV and one with Blast Protection IV gives 48% general protection plus 80% against explosions. Second, a specific protection is twice as effective as Protection against its own damage type, but it does nothing against anything else, and the combined reduction from all protection enchantments is capped at 80%.

Thorns: optional, and legal on every piece

Thorns III gives each piece worn a 15% chance per level to damage whoever attacks you (1 to 5 damage), and it increases the durability damage your armor takes, so Mending is the natural partner. The anvil accepts Thorns on helmets, chestplates, leggings and boots in both editions. Where editions differ is only the enchanting table: Java can roll Thorns there only on chestplates, Bedrock on all four pieces. The ideal helmet and chestplate builds include Thorns III; skip it on any piece if you rarely fight in melee.

Mending and Unbreaking on armor

Armor gets less from Unbreaking than tools do: each durability hit has only a 20%, 26.7% or 30% chance of being ignored at Unbreaking I, II and III, so armor lasts about 1.25, 1.36 or 1.43 times as long. Mending (2 durability per XP point, on worn armor too) does most of the work, and neither conflicts with anything on armor, so both stay in every build.

Slot choices that need a decision

  • Helmet: Respiration III extends your breath underwater and Aqua Affinity removes the underwater mining penalty. Neither conflicts with anything, so take both if you build or explore underwater.
  • Leggings: Swift Sneak raises your sneaking speed by 15% of your walking speed per level, from 30% to 75% of walking speed at level III. It can only be found as an enchanted book in Ancient City chests, so build the rest of the leggings first and add it if you find one.
  • Boots, water: Depth Strider III lets you swim as fast as you walk, while Frost Walker II freezes water under your feet so you walk across it. They exclude each other. Frost Walker suits crossing oceans and rivers, Depth Strider suits working underwater. See Frost Walker vs Depth Strider.
  • Boots, falling: Feather Falling IV cuts fall damage by 48% and has no conflicts.
  • Boots, Nether: Soul Speed III speeds you up on soul sand and soul soil and slowly drains durability while you do. The game does not stop you putting it on the same boots as Depth Strider or Frost Walker (only those two exclude each other), but the ideal boots guide keeps it on a dedicated second pair, since it only pays off in soul sand valleys. It comes only from bastion chests and piglin bartering.

Java and Bedrock differences for armor

The best build for each piece is the same on both editions. The only difference worth knowing is where you can get Thorns from the enchanting table (see above); everything you build on an anvil is identical.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best armor enchantments in Minecraft?

Protection IV on every piece, Unbreaking III and Mending, plus the piece-specific ones: Respiration III and Aqua Affinity on the helmet, Swift Sneak III on the leggings, and Feather Falling IV with Depth Strider III or Frost Walker II on the boots. Thorns III is optional on any piece.

What are the best helmet enchantments?

Protection IV, Respiration III, Aqua Affinity, Thorns III, Unbreaking III and Mending. None of them conflict with each other, so all six fit on one helmet. Swap Protection for Fire, Blast or Projectile Protection only if you know the fight in advance.

What are the best boots enchantments?

Protection IV, Feather Falling IV, Unbreaking III and Mending, plus either Depth Strider III for swimming or Frost Walker II for walking across water. Depth Strider and Frost Walker cannot be combined. Soul Speed III is best kept on a separate pair for soul sand valleys.

Can I mix Protection and Blast Protection on the same armor set?

Yes, on different pieces. The four protection enchantments exclude each other only on the same piece, so one piece can have Blast Protection IV while the others have Protection IV. On a single piece you can only have one of them.

Is Thorns worth putting on armor?

It is optional. Each worn piece with Thorns has a 15% chance per level to damage an attacker, but Thorns also increases the durability damage your armor takes, so pair it with Mending. If you mostly avoid melee, you can leave it off.

Does Soul Speed conflict with Depth Strider or Frost Walker?

No. Only Depth Strider and Frost Walker exclude each other, so Soul Speed can share boots with either. Most players still keep Soul Speed on a dedicated pair for the Nether, because it slowly drains durability on soul blocks and only helps there.

How can I get Swift Sneak for my leggings?

Only as an enchanted book from loot chests in Ancient Cities in the Deep Dark. It cannot be rolled at an enchanting table or traded for, so it is the one part of the leggings build you cannot craft on demand.
