Fire Protection cuts fire and lava damage specifically — at double plain Protection's rate against that one damage type — and also shortens how long you stay on fire.

What Fire Protection actually does

Each level reduces fire/lava damage by 8%, up to 32% at level IV. It also reduces how long you burn once set on fire, by 15% per level — stacked across a full set of four Fire Protection pieces, burn duration reduction can reach 100%, making the wearer effectively immune to catching fire at all.

How to use it

Fire Protection is the right swap-in for Nether-heavy play, lava-adjacent building, or Blaze/Ghast-fight gear — anywhere fire/lava damage is the dominant threat. Like the other situational protections, it does nothing extra against melee, fall, explosion, or projectile damage, so plain Protection remains the better all-purpose default.

Well-known builds that use it

Not part of the standard armor builds (which use plain Protection) — Fire Protection is a deliberate swap for dedicated Nether-exploration or fire-heavy-content gear.

Frequently asked questions

Can a full set of Fire Protection make you immune to burning?

Close to it — burn-duration reduction stacks across all four pieces and can reach 100% at a high enough combined level, meaning you'd stop taking burn-over-time damage entirely even if the damage-reduction itself is capped lower.

Is Fire Protection better than Protection in the Nether?

Specifically against fire/lava damage, yes (8% per level vs. 4%). Against mob attacks or fall damage, plain Protection still helps while Fire Protection does nothing extra.
