Curse of Vanishing destroys an item completely on death, instead of letting it drop for you (or anyone else) to recover.

What Curse of Vanishing actually does

When a player carrying a cursed item dies, that item is removed from the world entirely rather than dropping as a pickup-able item — nobody gets it back, not even the player who respawns. It only triggers on death: manually dropping the item beforehand, storing it in a chest/shulker box/bundle, or playing with the keepInventory gamerule enabled all avoid the loss. It's a single-level effect with no stronger version, and it has unusually broad applicability — unlike most enchantments restricted to a category of item, it can apply to nearly anything enchantable at all, including a compass.

How to use it

Like Curse of Binding, this is something you almost always want to avoid rather than seek — it shows up on certain mob/loot-dropped gear and makes that item a liability on anything you'd be sad to lose permanently. One quirk worth knowing: placing a cursed block item removes the curse from it, if that's ever relevant. In Hardcore mode specifically, the curse has essentially no extra practical bite, since death already ends the game regardless of what you lose.

Why this exists

Curse of Vanishing is the second of the two "curse" enchantments (alongside Curse of Binding) that work against the player — part of what makes certain found gear feel like a genuine risk/reward decision rather than a pure upgrade. See Enchanting Strategy for how the anvil mechanics this calculator models treat a curse the same as any other enchantment, cost-wise — it's just one you'd typically avoid combining onto gear you actually want to keep.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when you die with a Curse of Vanishing item?

The item is destroyed outright — it doesn't drop on the ground for anyone to pick up, including you after respawning.

How do you avoid losing a cursed item on death?

Store it somewhere other than your main inventory/equipped slots before you risk dying — a chest, shulker box, or bundle all work — or play with the keepInventory gamerule enabled, which prevents the curse (and all normal item loss) from triggering.

Does Curse of Vanishing have levels?

No — it's a single-level (I) effect, same as Curse of Binding.

Can non-equipment items have Curse of Vanishing?

Yes — it has unusually broad reach for a curse, applying to nearly any enchantable item including things like a compass, not just armor/tools/weapons.
