How to Cure a Zombie Villager for Trade Discounts
Published October 9, 2026
Curing a zombie villager is the single biggest lever on villager trade prices in the game — see Cheapest Way to Get Enchanted Books for why that matters. This is the actual step-by-step: how to get a zombie villager on purpose, what the cure requires, and where to source the ingredients.
Step 1: Get a zombie villager (and why difficulty matters)
A regular villager only turns into a zombie villager when a zombie kills it — and the chance of that happening instead of the villager just dying depends entirely on your world's difficulty:
- Easy: 0% — a villager killed by a zombie never converts, it just dies.
- Normal: 50% — a coin flip each time.
- Hard: 100% — every villager a zombie kills becomes a zombie villager.
If you're deliberately farming zombie villagers to cure, this means difficulty isn't just a combat setting — it's the actual infection-rate dial. Doing this on Easy will never work; Hard guarantees it.
Step 2: Infect and contain safely
The common approach: trap a spare villager somewhere a zombie can reach it but you're still safe (a fenced pen with a one-block gap works), let a zombie land the killing blow on Hard difficulty, then immediately wall off the resulting zombie villager so it can't wander off or attack you during the 3-5 minute cure window — it's still fully hostile until the cure finishes.
Step 3: Weaken it, then feed it a golden apple
Curing needs two things, in order:
- Apply Weakness — a splash or lingering Potion of Weakness, or a Tipped Arrow of Weakness, thrown/shot at the zombie villager.
- Use a golden apple on it — a regular golden apple, not an enchanted one (the enchanted/"God apple" version does not work for curing).
Once both conditions are met, the zombie villager starts shuddering and emitting particles — the cure has begun.
Step 4: Wait (or speed it up)
The cure takes a random 3-5 minutes (3,600-6,000 ticks) on its own. Placing beds or iron bars within a 9×9×9 area centered on the zombie villager speeds this up slightly — each block (up to 14 counted) has a 30% chance per tick to shave a tick off the timer, which works out to roughly 4% faster on average. Worth doing if you have spare beds/bars lying around, not worth a special trip for.
Getting the ingredients
Potion of Weakness is brewed directly from a Water Bottle + a Fermented Spider Eye (it's the one potion effect that skips the Awkward Potion step) — craft the Fermented Spider Eye itself from a Spider Eye + Sugar + a Brown Mushroom. Add Gunpowder to make it a splash potion you can throw.
Golden apple: craft from 8 gold ingots surrounding 1 apple on a crafting grid.
Apples come from one place: oak and dark oak leaves have a small (roughly 0.5%) chance to drop one when they decay or are broken without Silk Touch — not a common drop to farm intentionally, but it adds up over a big tree farm.
Gold is the real bottleneck for stocking up on golden apples at scale. Regular gold ore generates in the Overworld, but far more densely in the Badlands biome (including near the surface, not just deep underground); Nether gold ore in the Nether wastes is also abundant and drops raw gold directly. See Best Biomes for Mining Specific Resources for exact generation details on both.

Frequently asked questions
What difficulty do I need to turn a villager into a zombie villager?
Hard guarantees it (100% conversion chance). Normal is a 50/50 chance. Easy never converts a villager at all — it just dies when a zombie kills it, so farming zombie villagers on Easy difficulty doesn't work.
Does an enchanted golden apple work for curing a zombie villager?
No — curing specifically requires a regular (non-enchanted) golden apple. The enchanted golden apple doesn't trigger the cure.
Do I need an Awkward Potion to brew Potion of Weakness?
No — Weakness is the one potion effect brewed directly from a Water Bottle and a Fermented Spider Eye, skipping the Awkward Potion step every other potion needs.
How much faster does surrounding a zombie villager with beds or iron bars make the cure?
Only a modest amount — roughly 4% faster on average, from up to 14 qualifying blocks within a 9x9x9 area each having a small per-tick chance to shave time off the timer. Worth doing with blocks you already have, not worth going out of your way for.
Where's the best place to farm gold for golden apples?
The Badlands biome for a reliable Overworld source (gold ore generates far more densely there, including near the surface), or the Nether wastes, where Nether gold ore is abundant and drops raw gold directly without needing Fortune.
