Thorns reflects damage back at whatever hits you — for a price: it costs your armor extra durability every time it actually triggers.

What Thorns actually does

Each level gives a flat 15% chance per hit that the attacker takes reflected damage: 15% at level I, 30% at level II, 45% at level III. When it triggers, the armor piece that triggered it loses an extra 2 durability on top of whatever it would normally lose (subject to Unbreaking's own damage-save chance, same as any other durability loss).

How to use it

Thorns is a "free" damage source layered on top of whatever armor set you're already wearing — it doesn't cost you anything mechanically besides the enchantment slot and the extra durability wear when it actually procs. It's most valuable on a chestplate you wear constantly, since more hits taken means more chances for it to trigger.

Well-known builds that use it

Thorns III is part of the standard chestplate loadout in some builds — see The Ideal Chestplate Enchantments for exactly how it fits alongside Protection, Unbreaking, and Mending (it has no slot-specific competition the way Respiration/Aqua Affinity do on a helmet, so it's a straightforward addition where the build includes it).

Frequently asked questions

What's the exact chance Thorns III triggers?

45% per hit (15% per level). It's a per-hit roll, not a guarantee, and each armor piece with Thorns rolls independently.

Does Thorns damage your own armor?

Yes — whenever it actually triggers, the triggering piece loses an extra 2 durability on top of its normal durability loss from being hit.

Does Thorns conflict with Protection?

No. Thorns has no conflicts with any of the four Protection-family enchantments, or with Unbreaking/Mending — it stacks freely alongside all of them.
