Unbreaking makes an item last longer by giving each use a chance to not consume any durability at all — and that chance is bigger for tools/weapons than for armor.
What Unbreaking actually does
Every time an item would normally lose 1 durability, Unbreaking rolls a chance for that loss to simply not happen. The odds differ by item category:
- Tools and weapons: a
100% ÷ (level + 1)chance the use actually costs durability. Unbreaking I = 50% chance (lasts ~2× as long), Unbreaking II = 33.33% chance (~3× as long), Unbreaking III = 25% chance (~4× as long). - Armor: a
60% + 40% ÷ (level + 1)chance. Unbreaking I = 80% chance (~1.25× as long), Unbreaking II = 73.33% chance (~1.36× as long), Unbreaking III = 70% chance (~1.43× as long).
Armor's formula has a 60% floor baked in, which is why Unbreaking helps a tool's effective lifespan far more dramatically than it helps armor's — a tool goes from "costs durability every single use" to "costs durability 1 time in 4" at level III, while armor only ever gets down to "7 times in 10."
How to use it
Unbreaking III is close to a free addition on almost anything — it has no conflicts with any other enchantment, so there's essentially never a reason to skip it on a real build. The only real tradeoff is prior-work penalty cost on the anvil, not a mechanical downside.
Well-known builds that use it
Unbreaking is one of the standard enchantments on nearly every item build on this site — The Ideal Sword, Ideal Pickaxe, and Ideal Helmet all include it alongside their item-specific picks, and the same applies to every other tool/weapon/armor guide.
Frequently asked questions
Does Unbreaking III mean 75% less durability loss?
On tools and weapons, essentially yes — each use has a 25% chance of still costing durability (a 75% chance it doesn't), which works out to roughly 4x the effective lifespan. The exact math is a 100%÷(level+1) chance of losing durability, so level III gives 100%÷4 = 25%.
Does Unbreaking work the same on armor as on tools?
No — armor uses a different formula (60%+40%÷(level+1)) with a 60% floor, so Unbreaking III on armor only reaches a 70% chance of durability loss (about 1.43x lifespan) versus a tool's 25% chance (about 4x lifespan) at the same level.
Does Unbreaking conflict with anything?
No — Unbreaking has zero conflicts and stacks with every other enchantment, which is why it's standard on almost every build regardless of the item's other enchantments.
