The Ideal Helmet Enchantments

The helmet is the one armor slot with genuinely useful head-specific enchantments layered on top of the shared armor build, and almost none of it conflicts.

Protection IV (or a specialist swap)

Protection reduces incoming damage from almost every source. It's mutually exclusive with Fire Protection, Blast Protection, and Projectile Protection — all four occupy the same exclusion group, since they're really the same stat applied to different damage types. Protection IV is the correct generalist pick; swap to a specialist variant only if you know exactly what you're about to fight (Blast Protection for a Wither or raid fight, Fire Protection for the Nether).

Respiration III + Aqua Affinity

Respiration extends underwater breath time and reduces the drowning chance per level; Aqua Affinity removes the underwater mining-speed penalty entirely. Both are head_armor-category enchantments with no exclusions listed anywhere, so they stack freely with each other and with whichever Protection variant you pick — genuinely essential for underwater base-building or ocean monument runs.

Thorns III

Reflects a percentage of incoming melee damage back at the attacker. No exclusions, works on any armor piece, and stacks with everything above.

Unbreaking III + Mending

Standard durability pairing, compatible with the entire list above — meaning a fully-loaded helmet (Protection IV, Respiration III, Aqua Affinity, Thorns III, Unbreaking III, Mending) is a real, legal, six-enchantment item.
