Ender Dragon Fight Mechanics Explained
Published October 9, 2026
The Ender Dragon fight isn't a tank-and-spank boss — it's a two-phase puzzle with a hard-coded healing mechanic that has to be solved before damage even matters. Gear up first with Preparing for the End; this guide is about the fight itself.
Phase one: the crystals have to die first
The dragon has 200 HP, but as long as any of the ten End crystals on the obsidian pillars survive, it can heal from them — a visible beam of particles connects the dragon to whichever crystal is actively restoring its health. Fighting the dragon with crystals still up is close to pointless; you're racing regeneration you can't out-damage.
Eight of the ten crystals sit in the open and can be shot or sniped from range. The remaining two — on the two shortest pillars — are wrapped in a cage of iron bars that blocks projectiles entirely, so those have to be approached directly and broken by hand (or destroyed with TNT placed against the cage). Every crystal explodes at power 6 when destroyed — the same as a charged creeper — and destroying one while it's actively mid-heal deals a bonus 10 damage straight to the dragon on top of the explosion. Clear all ten before committing to the fight.
Phase two: perch vs. flight
With no crystals left, the dragon alternates between circling and strafing the player (its charge attack, which can fling you a long way on contact) and an occasional perching phase, where it lands on the portal structure and becomes vulnerable to melee at point-blank range. The chance it perches increases as fewer crystals remain before the fight even starts, which is one more reason to clear every crystal rather than leaving a couple standing "for safety." While perched and guarding, if a player gets within 20 blocks of the portal, after a short delay the dragon roars and unleashes a breath attack — a 3-second area effect that damages like a lingering potion of Harming. Get in, hit hard, and back off before that breath lands.
Ranged phase vs. melee phase: different enchantments matter
Ranged (crystal-clearing and flight phase): a bow or crossbow is what actually threatens the dragon while it's airborne, and it's also what gets the exposed crystals down safely from a distance.

Power V
Infinity I
Unbreaking III
Infinity is the better pick than Mending specifically for this fight: you'll be firing constantly at crystals and at the dragon mid-flight, and never running dry on arrows matters more here than durability does for one boss encounter. See The Ideal Bow Enchantments for the full case for either side of that fork.
Melee (the perch phase): once the dragon lands, a sword does far more damage per hit than you'll land with arrows at point-blank range.

Sharpness V
Unbreaking III
Mending I
Sharpness V is the only damage enchantment worth prioritizing here — the dragon isn't undead or an arthropod, so Smite and Bane of Arthropods do nothing extra, and Looting doesn't add anything either since the dragon's rewards (a large fixed XP payout, plus the dragon egg on the player's first kill of that dragon) aren't affected by it. Mending earns its place for a different reason: the dragon's defeat hands out one of the largest single XP rewards in the game, which is exactly the fuel Mending needs to fully repair your whole kit — sword, bow, and armor — in the minutes right after the fight. See The Ideal Sword Enchantments for the rest of that build.

After the fight, the exit portal typically holds a free elytra-and-related rewards setup on some servers, but in vanilla survival the real elytra source is a separate trip — see Where to Get Elytra.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the dragon seem unkillable at first?
Because it's healing from End crystals on the obsidian pillars faster than most players can out-damage it. The fight is designed to be solved in order: destroy every crystal first, then fight the dragon with no healing left to work against.
How do you destroy the two caged End crystals?
Those two crystals sit behind a cage of iron bars that blocks arrows and other projectiles. You have to get close — climb or ender-pearl up the pillar — and break the bars by hand with a pickaxe, or place and detonate TNT against the cage.
Does Looting help with the Ender Dragon fight?
No. The dragon's rewards — a large fixed experience payout and the dragon egg on your first kill — aren't part of a lootable drop table that Looting modifies, so it has no effect on this fight specifically.
Should you use Infinity or Mending on a bow for the dragon fight?
Infinity is the stronger pick for this specific fight — you'll be firing at crystals and at the dragon constantly, and running out of arrows mid-fight is a bigger risk than the bow's durability over one encounter. Mending is still a perfectly valid general-purpose choice outside this fight.
What does the dragon's breath attack do?
While perched and guarding, if you get within 20 blocks of the portal, the dragon roars and releases a 3-second area attack that deals damage similar to a lingering potion of Harming. It's a strong reason not to linger at point-blank range after your melee hits land.
