Where to Get Elytra

There's exactly one vanilla source of an elytra, and it's guarded. There's no crafting recipe, no villager trade, and no loot-table variant anywhere else — if you want to glide, this is the trip you have to make.

Where it actually is

Elytra are found inside End ships — the crashed-looking vessels that generate on some of the End's outer islands, next to (not inside) End cities. Each ship has a treasure room in its hull holding two loot chests and, mounted in an item frame, a single elytra. A shulker guards that treasure room and will attack the moment you get close, so the practical order is: clear or avoid the shulker first, then grab the elytra and the chests. Not every End city spawns a ship, so finding one can take exploring several outer islands — there's no shortcut around that other than covering more ground.

What it can actually be enchanted with

This is the one piece of elytra folklore worth being skeptical of: people often assume it takes the same enchantments as chestplate armor, since it occupies the chest slot. It doesn't. An elytra's enchantment category is its own thing, separate from regular armor, and only four enchantments are legal on it at all:

  • Unbreaking — reduces durability loss per use, same as on any other gear.
  • Mending — repairs the elytra with collected XP instead of levels.
  • Curse of Binding — a curse; locks the elytra into the chest slot until you die, break it, or switch to Creative. Almost nobody wants this deliberately.
  • Curse of Vanishing — a curse; destroys the elytra on death instead of letting it drop. Also almost never wanted on purpose.

Notably, Protection and its three specialist variants do not apply to elytra at all — not because of a conflict, but because elytra simply isn't in the same enchantment category as chestplates, helmets, leggings, or boots. If a "best elytra enchantments" list online includes Protection, Feather Falling, or Thorns, that list is wrong for current versions.

The actual recommended build

Elytra
Elytra
  • Unbreaking III
  • Mending I

Unbreaking III plus Mending is the whole practical build — there's nothing else worth adding on purpose. Mending in particular matters more here than on most gear, since elytra durability drains continuously while gliding rather than only on hits or use, so a self-repairing elytra is the difference between planning around spare copies and never thinking about durability again.

Build the Elytra →

Firework rockets boost elytra flight and have nothing to do with enchanting, so they're outside the scope of an anvil build — but worth knowing about once you have the elytra itself. For the trip to get one, see Preparing for the End for the armor and weapons to bring against the endermen and shulkers you'll meet on the way, and Ender Dragon Fight Mechanics Explained if you're tackling the dragon on the same trip.

Frequently asked questions

Can you craft or buy an elytra?

No. There's no crafting recipe and no villager trade for an elytra in vanilla survival — the only source is finding one in an End ship's treasure room, inside an item frame, guarded by a shulker.

Does Protection work on an elytra?

No. Elytra has its own enchantment category, separate from armor, and Protection (along with Fire, Blast, and Projectile Protection) isn't part of it. Only Unbreaking, Mending, Curse of Binding, and Curse of Vanishing are legal on an elytra.

Is Mending worth it on an elytra specifically?

Yes, arguably more than on most gear — elytra durability drains continuously during flight rather than only per-hit or per-use, so a Mending elytra effectively never needs replacing as long as you're earning XP.

What does Curse of Binding do if it ends up on an elytra?

It locks the elytra into your chestplate slot — you can't remove or swap it out until you die, the item breaks, or you switch to Creative mode. It's a legal combination, just not one anyone wants deliberately.

Do all End cities have an elytra to find?

No — only End cities that generate an End ship have one, and not every End city does. Finding an elytra can mean checking several outer islands before you get a ship.
