Protection reduces incoming damage from almost any source, by a flat percentage per level, per piece of armor worn.
What Protection actually does
Each level of Protection reduces incoming damage by 4%, up to 16% per piece at level IV. Wearing a full set of four Protection IV pieces stacks that reduction across all four — a full-set Protection IV loadout meaningfully blunts hits from nearly any damage source: mob attacks, falls, fire, explosions, and projectiles alike (the other three protections below only cover ONE of those specifically, at a higher per-level rate).
How to use it
Protection is the generalist pick — it's the correct default for a full-time armor set you wear everywhere, since it covers every damage type at once rather than specializing in one. It's mutually exclusive with Blast Protection, Fire Protection, and Projectile Protection: a piece of armor can only have one of the four. The other three exist for situational specialization (e.g. Blast Protection specifically for a Creeper farm), covered in their own articles.
Well-known builds that use it
Protection IV is the standard pick on every armor piece in The Ideal Helmet, Ideal Chestplate, Ideal Leggings, and Ideal Boots builds — alongside Unbreaking III and Mending on every piece, plus whichever piece-specific enchantments apply (Thorns, Respiration, Depth Strider/Frost Walker, Swift Sneak).

Frequently asked questions
How much damage does Protection IV actually reduce?
16% per piece (4% per level). A full set of four Protection IV pieces stacks that reduction across all four pieces, for significant overall damage reduction against nearly any source.
Can you have Protection and Blast Protection on the same armor piece?
No — they're mutually exclusive, along with Fire Protection and Projectile Protection. A piece of armor can only have one of the four protection types at a time.
Is Protection better than Blast/Fire/Projectile Protection?
For general play, yes — it covers every damage type at once. The situational protections only beat it against their one specific damage type, at a higher per-level rate for that type specifically.
